Is it possible to change the solidworks behavior when it comes to closed sketches? Specifically, once a sketch is closed, clicking inside of the sketch selects the sketch. Clicking outside of the sketch selects what you are clicking. I want to always select what I am clicking on, regardless of whether the sketch is closed or not.

There's a toggle to turn off shaded sketch contours. Add it to your toolbar and turn it on or off as needed:
Re: Select Inside Sketch
I'm not sure why I would ever want it on.

Re: Select Inside Sketch
So I have it on as visual as to when a sketch is closed or open. Sketch shaded? Sketch closed. Not shaded? Sketch is open. Probably not a big deal but is nice to know when I might be able to use "base flange" or an "Extrude Feature". Also I never noticed that I could not select something within a shaded contour as I normally would be looking for an edge or point & those I can select through the shading. Also with shaded contour on you can select the shaded part & drag your whole sketch with out changing the shape or size which can be useful for sketch placement.

Can you right click and use select other?
When I have a closed contour that shaded it won't allow you to pick a surface, but it does allow you to select lines/arcs
