Is SOLIDWORKS Cloud Services ITAR Compliant?

Unread post by DennisD »

I just read through this article:
https://www.engineersrule.com/solidwork ... -323873169

I see no mention of ITAR compliance so I assume this is not. I am asking here because I am not on subscription, so my VAR has no obligation to me and besides, I typically see a much faster response on this forum.

Do you mean the software itself or designs stored in the cloud?

I would not think the software would be since it's already sold all over the globe.

Not sure how the cloud services would or could be either.

Google ITAR and cloud services. It will give you a few websites with an explanation of what is required and who currently has those requirements met.

Such clients would use on-premise cloud.

Sorry to dumb it down, but I need simple terms.

Can a company that designs/manufactures components that are used in products sold to the US Govt. DOD use the DSS cloud hosted storage of component design data and still be ITAR compliant?

There is no such thing. If it is on-premise it isn't cloud.

Our cloud server is not compliant.
You need to pay us to setup and maintain a server on your site.

You need to pay to play.

It's called a private cloud. Cloud is not about being public or not it is about using cloud services and cloud computing.

Just a reminder. ITAR is about data security and storage- specifically DOD data. Cloud systems can be ITAR compliant. Cloud systems can also be setup to comply with global government security requirements. I believe that Siemens, DS and PTC have specific "divisions" that supply these cloud systems.

Yeah, ITAR requirements are a burden and are really based on 1980-90's type of data security. Sure wish the US Government would update its requirements!

I'm no lawyer and cannot read legalese, but my dumbed down understanding of the whole thing is an adaptation of the the old cliché, "I don't trust your digital data security and farther than I can find that server, pull it from the rack, and throw it."

Adding layers of cyber complexity and giving it fancy 21st century marketing terms, ie. "cloud", doesn't change the essence of the policy.

A legal consulting firm can answer that kind of question.

I think Corporate Investigation Consulting can help with those questions. I usually go to them if I have ITAR problems.
