Say I have "Part B" that is based on the insertion and modification of "Part A".
I open Part B only.
In the feature tree, I see: Part A->?
If I open Part A, the "?" goes away.
The External References data tells me that SolidWorks knows exactly where Part A resides, even when it's not open.
Why am I getting the "?"
Thanks.

My guess is if you change this setting, it will load the referenced file when you load the part. I think it will always show the "?" if the external reference isn't loaded.

Re: "in context" part not loading automatically
That was it. I changed the setting to “Changed Only (incl. assemblies)” and left "Load documents in memory only” checked.
Works perfectly.
Thanks.
I wonder what the default is.

If you change the setting to automatically load referenced files, that should help.
