Flat pattern of rod handle

Unread post by kacper.suchomski »

How to model a simple handle?
A trivial question. But is it really?

Before I try to answer this question, let me remind you that the purpose of creating CAD models is primarily to enable efficient and error-free production. Although the project can fulfill many roles, in the end you have to remember about the workshop/plant and the people who expect specific information.

Returning to modeling techniques...

Without a doubt, the first answer is to sweep the sketch along the path.
This is a very intuitive and popular method.
Let's consider what it is characterized by:
✅ fast execution time
✅ one file
❌ no information on the length of the raw material
❌ no information on bending

An alternative method is to use a frame generator - after all, a bent rod is also a profile.
What characterizes the workflow using profiles:
✅ automatic calculation of the total length
❌ lack of information about bending locations
❌ many files and folder structures for a simple element
❌ long time to develop the model.

But there is a third method.
(of course, nothing stops you from inventing more of them)
This method is characterized by:
✅ one file
✅ simplicity of the process
✅ short modeling time
✅ contains all the technological information
✅ the ability to automatically read some technological information.
