Windows Explorer address bar does not update current file path when browsing inside PDM Vault View folders on Windows 11 after installing 26 September 2023 Configuration Update KB5030509

Description

On 26th September 2023, Microsoft has released a 'Configuration Update for Windows 11 (KB5030509)'. Its details can been seen here > https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/top ... 116fe164ba

This update moves the address bar above the ribbon bar and makes some changes to the ribbon bar layout. In addition, it changes some behaviors of the address bar.

If this update is installed on a Windows 11 machine, Windows Explorer address bar no longer update the path while browsing PDM vault view folders. Other non-PDM folders works fine.

To reproduce;

1) Assuming you have a vault view in C:\PDMViews named 'ACME PDM Vault'
2) Browse to 'C:\' > Address bar shows 'C:'
3) Browse to 'C:\PDMViews' > Address bar shows 'C:\PDMViews'
4) Browse to 'C:\PDMViews\ACME PDM Vault' > Address bar shows 'C:\PDMViews'
5) Browse to 'C:\PDMViews\ACME PDM Vault\Projects' > Address bar shows 'C:\PDMViews'

File save and open dialogs of SOLIDWORKS and other applications are working as expected. There are no other known workaround and it is not possible to uninstall this update.

__end kb article

My provisional test results about a possible mitigation:
if you have a file inside a folder and you want to copy and paste its path, RMB the file and select "copy path" it will copy also the file name, so you need to delete it to get the clean folder path.

UPDATE

another workaround is launch the old control panel and press the up arrow twice: old explorer is loaded and you can browse the vault with it.

shortcut
c:\windows\explorer.exe shell:controlpanelfolder

UPDATE2

The control panel trick is adopted as official workaround in the KB LOL

It seems like this might be fixed? Although, green folder icons in Quick Access are still missing. What's everyone else's experience?

on the official forum there are reports of a partial fix, with the navigation tree not working, but it depends on the windows update deployment policy of your company. I have only a machine at the latest update that is completely broken and I still do not know how it got in that state.other pc have not yet received the broken explorer version.

Experiencing the same problem, our IT department just said it does not work anymore and if you need the file path to right click on it.
We can still use the delete button to go back a folder, so happy with that for now.
Hopefully a patch will come but I'm not putting money on it.

Use the control panel shortcut to launch the old explorer and everything works (until the next major update)

All of a sudden mine is fixed. I see there was an update on 12/05/23 (KB5032288). I wonder if that was it? I just rebooted. Not sure when I last did. I didn't have any updates pending reboot. But, maybe it still needed one kick in?

microsoft and solidworks are workIng to address the issue. there was a report that the fix microsoft rolled out was still partially broken as the navigation tree was not working properly.

this problem is showing up in different timings due to the difference in administrative policies between companies and it dept.
early adopters of new windows features were the first affected, while companies with a scheduled major update deployment are still using an older windows version like 22H2

I wonder if I should include this *fix* inside my Admin image independently from windows version and windows update status...

This fix is a batch file that looks for NameSpace.dll inside the pdm client installation path and replace both the 32 and 64 bit version of the library.
The SOLIDWORKS® PDM 2024 SP01 release corrects this issue.

General Hotfixes (HF) are available for SOLIDWORKS PDM 2024 SP0.1, SOLIDWORKS PDM 2023 SP05, and SOLIDWORKS PDM 2022 SP05.

The hotfix is a client-side update for affected Windows 11 systems. To update clients that are in an older version or service pack, upgrade the client to a version that supports the applicable hotfix.

To see the installed client version, click the logged in user icon and select About.

Install instructions

Download the attached hotfix file.
For a SOLIDWORKS PDM 2024 SP0.1 client, use SWPDM2024SP0.1_HF1181214_Hotfix.zip.
For a SOLIDWORKS PDM 2023 SP5 client, use SWPDM2023SP05_HF1181214_Hotfix.zip.
For a SOLIDWORKS PDM 2022 SP5 client, use SWPDM2022SP05_HF1181214_Hotfix.zip.
Close all open applications, right-click the SOLIDWORKS PDM icon in the notification area and select Exit.
Extract the downloaded zip file to a local folder.
Right-click “HotFix_HF1181214.bat” and select Run as administrator.
Follow the instructions in the prompt.

Known issues

Windows 11 systems with the Windows KB update and above fix applied does not expand the folder tree automatically to highlight the current folder. Microsoft® plans to address this limitation in a future Windows update.

Thanks for posting the hotfix. I was struggling with this after upgrading to PDM2023.
